A first for TypeCon, as portion of our work to do much more neighborhood outreach in the city wherever every single conference is held, we taught a newspaper layout workshop at the Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School. 10 junior to high school college students realized about photo editing, layout, typography, and story editing above a two-day period. The class was led by the inimitable Rick Griffith, a teacher and designer from Denver. Ben van Dyke, Stephanie Geerlings, and I lent a hand along with BASCS instructors such as Anthony Riccio.

Most of the students had in no way utilized Photoshop or InDesign prior to, or thought about layout. Inside two days we had finished an eight-page tabloid with stories about their school (this kind of as their a hundred% college acceptance price). Specific thanks to Annie Deck-Miller from the Buffalo Law Journal for arranging the donation of printing at Buffalo NewsPress.

The newspaper was printed these days and will be distributed to TypeCon attendees. We’ll speak much more about the workshop on Friday in the course of the Type in twenty session.
