"Don’t mind if I hang out with you, do you? No, you don’t." – This dog in Lijiang’s “old town” region of Baisha (“White Sand”) hung out with us in the open-air restaurant where we ate, begging for scraps, which it got quite a few of. At first I thought the owners wouldn’t want us feeding it and as a result encouraging it to preserve begging, but it didn’t seem to happen to them that some individuals wouldn’t want a dog underfoot as they ate. It didn’t bother us, at any price. But this canine sure seemed to have a sense of entitlement—it made me experience like a complete jerk for even taking into consideration not feeding it. A couple of other dining establishments we ate at in Yunnan and Guangdong also had canines hanging about, and they actually lent a specific charm to these areas.
